History of VSP Vision
VSP Vision was founded in 1955 by a group of optometrists committed to providing affordable, high-quality eye care to the public. Initially known as California Vision Services, the company grew rapidly and eventually rebranded as Vision Service Plan (VSP) and then more recently, VSP Vision. VSP Vision became the first not-for-profit vision benefits company in the United States. Over the decades, it expanded its offerings to include eyewear, telehealth, and eye care services, becoming a leader in the industry with a network of providers and innovative programs promoting eye health and wellness.
Optical Illusions: An Optometric Practice is an in-network VSP Provider and are Platinum-level VSP Premier Edge practices, which means VSP Vision members can maximize their VSP benefits here and get the most out of their eye care experience at our four practice locations.
VSP Vision Insurance Benefits
Using your VSP Vision insurance benefits annually is crucial for maintaining both your vision and overall health. Annual eye exams help detect changes in vision and allow for the timely prescription of glasses or contact lenses, ensuring optimal visual performance. These exams also play a key role in identifying early signs of eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration, which can progress without noticeable symptoms. Additionally, eye exams can reveal systemic health conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure. Regular use of VSP benefits not only safeguards your vision but also helps prevent costly medical treatments down the line, making the most of your insurance coverage.
Comprehensive Eye Exams
Comprehensive eye exams evaluate your overall eye health and vision. These exams assess visual acuity, check for refractive errors like nearsightedness or farsightedness, and screen for early signs of eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration. They also monitor systemic health conditions like diabetes and hypertension, which can affect the eyes.
Typically, VSP covers a comprehensive eye exam with a copay.
Ultra-Widefield Retinal Screening
Ultra-widefield retinal screenings provide an extensive view of the retina, capturing detailed images that can reveal signs of retinal diseases, including tears, detachment, and diabetic retinopathy. This technology allows for early detection and treatment of conditions that might not be visible through traditional methods, improving long-term eye health outcomes.
Typically, VSP does not cover of retinal imaging. However, certain VSP plans may cover the retinal screening with a copay.
Contact Lens Fittings & Materials
Contact lens fittings and evaluations ensure that contact lenses fit properly for optimal comfort and vision. The fitting process considers the shape of the cornea, lifestyle preferences, and any underlying eye conditions. Various CL materials, such as soft lenses, rigid gas permeable lenses, and specialty lenses, are selected to suit individual needs and enhance both comfort and eye health.
Typically, VSP provides a discount or requires a copay for contact lens fittings and provides an allowance for CL materials.
Frame and Lens Materials
Frame and lens materials offer a range of options to balance style, durability, and function. Frames can be made from lightweight materials like titanium for comfort or acetate for a more stylish look. Lens materials, such as polycarbonate and high-index plastics, provide impact resistance and thinner profiles, while advanced coatings enhance clarity and UV protection.
Typically, VSP provides an allowance for frames and has various copays for base lenses and material add-ons. You can only use your material benefits on glasses or contacts, but not both.
