Meet the Owner
Dr. William To is a NBEO Board-Certified Optometric Physician in AK and Doctor of Optometry in CA with over a decade of healthcare expertise in caring for and educating patients. He believes in providing a complete eye care experience, emphasizing a patient-centric approach through mutual respect and open communication. Dr. Will was born and raised in California, but has lived in various places around the country, including Florida, Colorado, Hawaii, and Alaska. He finished his undergraduate degree at UC San Diego, where he received a B.S. in Human Biology and a Minor in Psychology. He later earned his Doctorate in Optometry at Western University of Health Sciences. He currently lives partly in the Bay Area and in Douglas, Juneau.
Dr. Will became the owner of Optical Illusions: An Optometric Practice in San Mateo, CA in 2019. His goal was simple: to create an optometry practice that combined the highest quality eyecare that patients deserved, with premium eyewear made of the highest quality sustainable materials in the world, and the most advanced technology and diagnostic equipment available.
Due to his accomplishments and involvement in the community, Dr. Will has received several awards and recognitions, including the American Optometric Association Presidential Advocacy Service Award Recipient in 2021, California Optometric Association Young Optometrist of the Year 2022, International Association of Healthcare Professionals Top Optometrist in 2021, and Newsweek Top 200 America’s Best Eye Doctors in 2023. The Optical Illusions optometric practices have also been recognized as one of the top practices in their respective areas, winning Best of Juneau for Optometrist (Eye Doctor) multiple years in a row and Nextdoor ‘Neighborhood Fave’ for Best Medical Professional in San Mateo and San Ramon.
As of 2024, there are a total of seven practice locations, including Lifetime Eyecare in Juneau and Optical Illusions: An Optometric Practice in Santana Row.

At Optical Illusions, we partner with manufacturers like CooperVision in fitting Contact Lens products that are Net Plastic Neutral, and with Bausch & Lomb and Terracycle to recycle over 30 lbs of contact lens packaging materials in each of our offices each quarter. We have contributed to preventing the equivalent of over 250 million plastic bottles from reaching our oceans. That’s good for the planet—and good for people, too.
