As the sun sets over the rolling hills of San Ramon, the night sky prepares for a stunning celestial performance. June has arrived, bringing with it warm breezes, glowing sunsets, and two must-see astronomical phenomena. The breathtaking Strawberry Moon and the delicate, Butterfly Stars. If you’re looking for a reason to get outdoors, plan a romantic date, or reconnect with the wonders of the universe, this is it.

There are moments in nature that remind us how extraordinary our world is! These moments are even more magical when seen through healthy, crystal-clear eyes.

What is the Strawberry Moon?

The Strawberry Moon is the full moon that occurs in June. To mark the time of the wild strawberry harvest. Contrary to popular belief, the moon doesn’t actually turn pink or red. The moon actually appears lower in the sky than any other full moon of the year. This low position often gives it a warm, golden glow and creates an optical illusion of it being larger than usual. A sight that’s both rare and mind blowing.

This year, the Strawberry Moon rises on the evening of June 11, 2025, and it promises to be a stargazer’s dream.

Where to Watch the Strawberry Moon in San Ramon

San Ramon locals are in for a treat this year. Community members and amateur astronomers will be gathering at Bishop Ranch Regional Preserve! A serene, elevated location with wide-open skies and minimal light pollution. It’s the perfect place for stargazing. Whether you’re bringing a telescope or just a cozy blanket and some snacks, you’ll have one of the best views in the Bay Area.

Arrive early. The Strawberry Moon rises around sunset, so plan to be in place by 8:00 PM. You’ll not only catch the golden light of the setting sun but also witness the moon’s first ascent over the horizon, a magical transition from day to night.

For those who want a more private viewing experience, consider Windemere Ridge Trail or Las Trampas Wilderness. Both offer peaceful escapes with elevation, ensuring optimal visibility of the moon and stars.

Meet the Butterfly Stars

If you thought the Strawberry Moon was impressive, the sky has more in store.

Just days later, on the evening of June 16, another celestial gem will appear: the Butterfly Stars. Officially known as Messier 6 or the Butterfly Cluster. This dazzling cluster of young, blue-white stars is shaped like a butterfly spreading its wings and sits in the constellation Scorpius, just east of the red giant star Antares.

First recorded by Giovanni Batista Hodierna in the 17th century, the Butterfly Cluster is located around 1,600 light years away. What makes this event even more magical is how clearly it can be seen in the summer skies, especially from darker, elevated areas.

Best Places Near San Ramon to View the Butterfly Stars

The Butterfly Cluster is best viewed around midnight on June 16, when it reaches its highest point in the night sky. Here are some top stargazing spots within easy reach of San Ramon:

  • Mount Diablo State Park: With its sweeping views and high elevation, Mount Diablo offers an excellent vantage point for deep-sky stargazing.
  • Morgan Territory Regional Preserve: Remote and quiet, this is a favorite among amateur astronomers.
  • Sycamore Grove Park: For those wanting a more accessible location with clear skies and ample parking, this is a great family-friendly option.

Bring a pair of binoculars or a telescope. While the Butterfly Stars can be seen with the naked eye under dark skies, magnification reveals their intricate, sparkling details.

Strawberry Moon Makes The Perfect Romantic or Adventure-Filled Night

Imagine this: you and your partner, under the stars, the cool breeze of June rustling the grass, and the Strawberry Moon rising like a spotlight from behind the hills. Moments later, you both turn your gaze to the dark canvas above. Where the Butterfly Stars shimmer like a secret written in the sky. It’s the perfect setting for connection, reflection, and wonder.

Whether it’s a spontaneous date night or a solo moment of mindfulness, these events bring the perfect opportunity to slow down and appreciate the beauty above.

See the Sky Clearly

There’s a detail often overlooked in the excitement of celestial events… your eyes!

Our ability to enjoy the wonders of the night sky depends entirely on how well we see. Low-light vision, clarity at a distance, and sensitivity to faint light are all essential for enjoying events like the Strawberry Moon and the Butterfly Stars. If you’ve found yourself squinting at the stars or struggling to focus on celestial objects, it might be time for an eye exam.

This June, give your vision the care it deserves.
